The National Official Certification Program is a cooperative effort between Canada Basketball and CABO to assist in the development and certification of officials. This program consists of five levels. The first three are administered by the provincial associations. Level four and five are certified nationally. In Nova Scotia, levels one and two will be carried out in each area under the direction of the Area Supervisor. Level three which is Three-Crew officiating, will be carried out by NSBO executive. Level 4 and 5 must be approved by CABO.
The core content of the levels program includes:
– rule knowledge
– floor mechanics
– game management
– court presence
Pre Level
– This level is for all new officials or for those who have not attained the requirements of the Level 1 criteria. Game fees are at 80% of the normal rate. Officials must work 30 games before moving to Level 1 status.
Level 1
– junior high official
– mini/bantam
– exam 70%
– evaluation (one game 70%)
Level 2
-jr.-senior high school
– mini/juvenile
– exam 80%
– evaluation (one game 80%)
Level 3
– top high school
– college/university
– 3-crew officiating
– exam 86%
– evaluation (two games 86%) Games must be Division 1 and up plus approved by our Executive.
Level 4
– national official
– exam 86%
– evaluation (two successful evaluations at a national event/ 17 and up)
Level 5
– international official
– CABO approved
Until an official has attained Level 1 status, he/she will be paid at 80% of the regular rate of pay.
